The town of Tolcsva and the Oremus winery are located at the heart of the Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region, located in mountainous area of north-eastern Hungary. Oremus, which in Latin means "let us pray", has had a colourful history as a wine producing estate. Tokaji has been produced here from as long ago as 1620 - then made by a Calvinist priest.
In 1993, just 3 years after the fall of Communism, the Alvarez family (owners of Vega Sicilia in Spain) turned their sights to Hungary and purchased the Oremus winery and founded Tokaj-Oremus Viñedos y Bodegas. The estate's activities are mainly based in Tolcsva, and a modern winemaking winery was built in 1999 connected to the maze of cellars that have been found there since the 13th century.
In 2002, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee recognised the exceptional winemaking conditions of the Tokaj region and awarded it World Heritage status. The legend of Tokaj has grown and grown in its four-hundred-year history, but it was not until 1630 that the greatness of the Oremus vineyard was first described. Today, it is universally renowned. During the harvest, several passes are made through the vineyard, but only bunches containing at least 50% botrytised grapes are selected. After destemming, the berries are left to macerate for 4-12 hours before pressing, with the emphasis on noble rot. Late Harvest is a very balanced wine made from an interesting blend of different grape varieties. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks for 15-25 days. The wine is then aged in Hungarian oak barrels (called Szerednyei and holding 220 litres) for three months and in the bottle for a 10 month ageing period. The Oremus Late Harvest Tokaji is a harmonious, fresh and silky wine that is very versatile and provides a wide array of possibilities.
