Tormaresca is made up of two estates in different areas of the Puglia wine region of southern Italy. In the central, inland region of Castel del Monte they grow the Aglianico grape and in the Salento peninsula of the extreme south-east, Primitivo and Negroamaro grapes are grown. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are grown in both zones, giving the winemaking team at Tormaresca a broad palette from which to blend the very consistent range of wines. Antinori invested here in 1998 and in that time Tormaresca has become a flagship of Puglian production: Torcicoda combines the soft fruit of Primitivo (aka Zinfandel) with a definite Italian edge; Bocca di Lupo borrows the Aglianico variety from further west to thrilling, blackberryish effect; Masseria Maìme is regularly one of Puglia’s best, made from its greatest local grape, Negroamaro. Pietrabianca is the Cervaro of the south, its freshness and elegance belying its hot-climate origins. All the vineyards are planted unusually densely, giving extra depth to the wines. Negroamaro is Puglia's most versatile red grape variety and thrives in the unique Tormaresca terroir. Antinori's Tormaresca Torcicoda Primitivo del Salento was the first Apulian wine that got into Wine Spectator's Top 100. Matured for approximately 18 months before bottling, Torcicoda is an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, dominant notes of red fruit, black cherries, and plums merge with spicy sensations of liquorice, vanilla, and tobacco. Its entry on the palate is soft and generous with good structure sustained by an elegant tannic texture.
